Truth-telling or truth-telling process is an umbrella term that refers to a variety of actions and mechanisms used to address collective level harm, covering the three interlocking aspects of recognition, responsibility, and repair. Truth-telling has at its core the idea that to truly address harm a society must first tell the truth about the harm and the term has its roots in the truth commissions used frequently in transitional settings to uncover and illuminate the truths about previous human rights violations. As such, truth-telling does include traditional truth commissions and reparations programs, but as truth-telling processes expands to different settings, it also includes other mechanisms, such as restorative justice practices.
